Response for Loss and Desire by Janine Antoni

One of Janine Antoni's piece of works that really made me feel like I connected with the most is when she made herself out of soap and chocolate. As she gently washes the soap sculpture of herself away with the water she makes the connection of the love/ hate relationship we have with our appearance. With washing and also licking part of herself away the chocolate sculpture, it can connect to us wanting to be able to get rid of certain features of ourselves that we do not like. I definitely agree with this piece of work because, especially with myself, there are days when I have a love/hate relationship with myself wishing something was difference with a certain aspect of my physical appearance and wanting to almost be able to just wash it away like Antoni does with her soap sculpture in the bathtub. Not only me, but I also feel as if this piece of work can connect to society as a whole because there are so many things such as makeup and plastic surgery that people will do to alter their physical appearance because they are not necessarily pleased with their natural look of themselves. Since there was so emotion behind this piece of herself with the connection to her physical appearance, I believe that it made the piece extremely powerful since it essentially can make you reflect on yourself with the love/hate relationship that is there while looking at her piece.
